The Spaniards Inn
A 1585 coaching inn at the top of the Heath with a walled garden, a dog wash at the door and a long history of letting them in. Low beams, so mind your head rather than the dog.

What to expect
A Friday lunchtime at the pub on the lane between Hampstead and Highgate, with the fires lit.
Sixteenth century, low beams, uneven floors and a garden that fills the moment the sun comes out. The toll house opposite still narrows the road to a single car, which is why the traffic crawls past. Dick Turpin is supposed to have used it; Keats certainly did.
Spaniards Road, on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Walk up from Hampstead in twenty minutes or take the 210 bus, which stops outside.
