A day in Brighton

An hour from Victoria or London Bridge and the most reliable seaside day out from London. The Lanes when it rains, the pier when it does not, and the last train back is late.

What to expect

What it is

The most reliable seaside day out from London, because it works in bad weather. The Lanes and the North Laine are an afternoon on their own when it rains, the pier and the beach are there when it does not, and the town is big enough that neither runs out. The last train back is late enough to eat first.

Getting there

An hour from Victoria or London Bridge. Trains are frequent enough that the journey does not need planning around, which is most of why it is the default.

What it costs

No fixed fare worth printing. An advance single booked weeks ahead and a walk-up return bought on the platform are different amounts of money, so a single figure for a train ticket only describes the day somebody looked it up. Book ahead if the date is fixed, and check whether a railcard or a group ticket beats two singles before you pay.
