Directions

What to expect

English National Ballet opens its autumn at Sadler’s Wells with a triple bill built on rhythm, from 24 September to 3 October, with the English National Ballet Philharmonic playing live.

Worth knowing

Three pieces, two of them world premieres. George Balanchine’s Symphony in Three Movements is the opener and lasts twenty-one minutes: no tutus, no tiaras and no story, just thirty-two dancers driven by Stravinsky. Micaela Taylor’s Bow Out is new, and draws on the Nicholas Brothers and Bill Bojangles Robinson, the tap dancers who astonished the 1930s. Jae Man Joo’s Auguries of Innocence, also new, takes its cue from William Blake’s poetry and the music of Peteris Vasks.

Tickets start at £15 and the theatre adds a £4 transaction fee. It runs one hour fifty-five minutes including two twenty-minute intervals, so it is a later finish than the running time suggests. Angel is the nearest tube, about five minutes away.
