The Late Edition

London's evening edition. Independent, updated daily.

A day in Folkestone

Just under an hour from St Pancras on the highspeed, which makes it the quickest way from London to the sea. The Creative Quarter is the cobbled half.

What to expect

What it is

The quickest sea in reach of London, and not the seaside town people expect: the Creative Quarter is a run of cobbled streets given over to galleries, studios and independent shops, and the Harbour Arm is a converted railway pier with street food and bars along it. Go for the harbour in the evening rather than for a beach day.

Getting there

Just under an hour from St Pancras on the highspeed to Folkestone Central or Folkestone West. The slow way, from Cannon Street, takes just under an hour and fifty, so it is worth paying attention to which service you book.

What it costs

There is no fixed fare worth printing: an advance single booked weeks out and a walk-up return on the day are different amounts of money, and anyone quoting one number for a train ticket is quoting the day they looked. Book ahead and it is cheap; turn up and it is not. The one thing Southeastern does publish and hold to is Kids for a Quid, which lets an adult travel with up to four children at a pound each, and on a family day out that is most of the cost gone.
