What to expect

What it is

A small seaside town with seven separate beaches and bays, three of which hold Blue Flags. Viking Bay is the main one, a crescent right below the town, and the others are a short walk along the cliff in either direction. Dickens spent his summers here and the town has never once let anyone forget it.

Getting there

One hour twenty-one from St Pancras on the highspeed. It is on the same line as Margate and Ramsgate, so the three can be strung together in a day if you want.

What it costs

There is no fixed fare worth printing: an advance single booked weeks out and a walk-up return on the day are different amounts of money, and anyone quoting one number for a train ticket is quoting the day they looked. Book ahead and it is cheap; turn up and it is not. The one thing Southeastern does publish and hold to is Kids for a Quid, which lets an adult travel with up to four children at a pound each, and on a family day out that is most of the cost gone.
