Chinese New Year in Chinatown

The largest celebration outside Asia: lion dances through Gerrard Street, the parade up to Trafalgar Square and stages on the square itself. Free, and packed from midday.

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, and London celebrates on a Sunday, usually the one after, so 7 February is the expected date until the London Chinatown Chinese Association confirms.

Directions

What to expect

Chinatown does the lanterns, the lion dances between the restaurants and the queue for every table in Gerrard Street. It runs for days around the new year itself rather than on one afternoon, and the streets stay decorated for weeks.

Worth knowing

Free and unticketed. The restaurants take bookings months ahead for the weekend itself and turn away everyone else, so either book early or come on a weekday. The lion dances move between premises through the day and are worth following rather than waiting for.

Getting there

Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus are both two minutes. Chinatown is pedestrianised, which is why it fills so completely. The Soho page has the rest of what is on nearby.
