Hammersmith and City line: what it is useful for after dark

The Hammersmith and City runs from Hammersmith to Barking and shares almost all of its route. Where it is genuinely the best option, and where it is not.

A London Underground platform

The Hammersmith & City is the line Londoners forget exists, largely because it spends most of its journey on somebody else’s tracks. For long stretches it is a pink line drawn over the top of the Circle and the District, and if it is delayed there is usually another train on the same platform going the same way.

That is its weakness as a headline and its strength in practice.

Where it goes

Checked on tfl.gov.uk on 9 September 2026. Hammersmith to Barking, right across the city. From the west: Hammersmith, Goldhawk Road, Shepherd’s Bush Market, Wood Lane, Latimer Road, Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, Royal Oak, Paddington, Edgware Road, Baker Street, Great Portland Street, Euston Square and on east through the City and Whitechapel to Barking.

Where it is genuinely the best option

Notting Hill Carnival. Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park are the Carnival stations, and on Carnival weekend the crowd management around them is the difference between a good day and two hours in a queue. Our Carnival guide covers which stations are entry only and which are exit only, because that changes each year.

Shepherd’s Bush Market and Wood Lane for the market and for Westfield. Whitechapel and the east end of the line for the cluster of rooms in Bethnal Green and Hackney that burlesque and drag both run out of.

It stops at night

There is no Night Tube on the Hammersmith & City. The Night Tube runs on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines plus the Windrush on the Overground, and this is not one of them.

For the eastern end of the line that matters, because Bethnal Green sits on the Central line and does run late on a Friday and Saturday, while Whitechapel does not have a Night Tube service on this line. Check the Night Tube guide before planning a late night around an east London venue, and after dark for what is still open when you are deciding.

The practical upside

Because it shares track with the Circle and the District for most of its length, a Hammersmith & City problem is rarely a journey-ending one. Look at the platform indicator rather than the line status: another train going where you are going is usually two minutes behind.

Things to do in London at night covers the evening hour by hour, and tube strikes covers what runs when the Underground does not.

Questions people ask

Where does the Hammersmith and City line go?

Hammersmith to Barking. From the west it runs Hammersmith, Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush Market, Wood Lane, Latimer Road, Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, Royal Oak, Paddington, Edgware Road, Baker Street, Great Portland Street and Euston Square, then east through the City and Whitechapel to Barking.

Does the Hammersmith and City line run all night?

No. There is no Night Tube on it. The Night Tube runs on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines plus the Windrush on the Overground, on Friday and Saturday nights only.

Which line is best for Notting Hill Carnival?

Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park on the Hammersmith and City are the Carnival stations. Which are entry only and which are exit only changes each year, so check the arrangements before you travel.

Why does the Hammersmith and City line share stations with the Circle line?

Because it runs over the same tracks for most of its length, alongside the Circle and District lines. The practical upside is that a Hammersmith and City delay rarely ends a journey: another train going the same way is usually a couple of minutes behind on the same platform.
