Karaoke in London: what a private room really costs, and how late they go
The advertised price is per person per hour with a two-hour minimum. What that works out at, and where to sing for nothing.
The number on a karaoke website is not the number you pay. At Lucky Voice, the best known of the private room places, the advertised rate is per person, per hour, and every private booking is a minimum of two hours. Eight pounds is therefore sixteen at the very least, and that is before anyone buys a drink.
Lucky Voice Soho, in full
52 Poland Street, W1F 7NQ. Off-peak is 8 pounds per person per hour on every day of the week. Peak is 11 on Monday and Tuesday, 12 on Wednesday, 14 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 12 on Sunday.
Peak starts at 7pm Monday to Friday, 5pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday, which is the whole game: a room at 6pm on a Wednesday is 8 pounds an hour a head, and the same room an hour later is 12.
Opening is 5pm to 1am Monday and Tuesday, 5pm to 2am Wednesday to Friday, noon to 2.30am on Saturday and 2pm to 11pm on Sunday. Last entry is 1am Tuesday to Saturday.
The free one
Dragaoke at the Phoenix Arts Club is drag hosted karaoke and it is free to get in. It runs late, from about 10pm, in a basement off Charing Cross Road. It is a room rather than a booth, so you sing in front of everyone, which is either the appeal or the reason not to go.
Working out what an evening costs
Six people, two hours, on a Friday at peak: 14 pounds a head an hour is 168 for the room before drinks. The same six at 6pm, off-peak, is 96. Moving the booking an hour earlier is the single biggest lever there is.
