St Dunstan in the East: the bombed church that became a garden
A ruined Wren church in the City, planted as a public garden, free and open daily. The best fifteen minutes in London, and how to have it to yourself.

St Dunstan’s Hill, EC3R. A church wall with trees growing through it, a Gothic tower still standing, and creepers filling what used to be the nave. It is free, it is open every day, and it is the most affecting small space in London.
What happened to it
There has been a church here since about 1100. It was damaged in the Great Fire of 1666 and repaired, with Christopher Wren adding the steeple at the end of that century. That steeple is the part still standing.
The Blitz destroyed the rest in 1941. Rather than rebuild, the City of London chose to leave the ruin and plant it, and the garden opened to the public in 1971. So the ivy and the trees are deliberate, not neglect, which is what makes it work.
How to actually enjoy it
It is small and it gets busy. The garden is roughly the footprint of one church, and on a fine weekend afternoon there can be more people photographing it than the space comfortably holds.
Go early. First thing in the morning, particularly on a weekday before the City fills up, you can have it to yourself. That is a completely different experience from the same place at three on a Saturday, and it takes no more effort.
Autumn and spring are better than high summer, because the light comes through the empty windows at a lower angle.
Practical
Free, no ticket, no booking. Opening is daily during daylight hours, roughly from eight in the morning until dusk or early evening depending on the season, and the City of London publishes the current times.
Nearest stations are Monument and Tower Hill, both about five minutes on foot. It is on a slope, and the entrance from St Dunstan’s Hill is the step-free one.
It is a garden in a ruin, so the ground is uneven and it is genuinely slippery in the wet. It takes fifteen minutes unless you sit down, and sitting down is the point.
What is nearby
Leadenhall Market is ten minutes north and covered, which pairs well with this in the rain. The Tower of London is five minutes east. Sky Garden is a few minutes away, free with a slot booked ahead.
