Roller skating in London: roller discos and where to learn

Two different things go by this name in London: a roller disco you turn up to, and lessons that teach you to skate. Which you want, and where each one is.

Roller skates on a rink

People searching for roller skating in London are after one of two things, and the round-up lists tend to mix them together as though they were the same evening.

One is a roller disco: a room, a DJ, skate hire, and no expectation that you can actually skate. The other is lessons, which is a course rather than a night out. Turning up to the first hoping for the second is the usual mistake, and it is not a fun way to spend an evening on a hard floor.

The roller disco

Checked on the venue’s own site on 9 September 2026. Rollernation is the established one, and it describes itself as the home of roller disco in London. Club nights and family sessions, skate hire, and private hire of the space.

It is at 117 Bruce Grove, London N17 6UR, in Tottenham. That matters because it moved: it was in Vauxhall for years, and a good many listings and blog posts still send people there. If you have been told Vauxhall, the information is out of date.

Club nights are the evening version and family sessions the daytime one, and they are not interchangeable, so check which session you are buying.

Learning to skate

Roll Happy runs roller skating lessons in London for adults at all levels, from people who have never had skates on to skaters working on specific skills. They split teaching into four levels and run six week courses, with Brixton among their venues.

A six week course was £100 when we checked. They also run one-off lessons and social skates, which is the lower-commitment way in if six weeks is more than you want to promise.

The distinction worth understanding: a course teaches you to stop, which is the skill that makes a roller disco enjoyable rather than alarming. Most people who bounce off roller skating bounce off it because nobody taught them to stop.

What to expect either way

Skate hire is normal at disco nights and included or cheap. If you go more than twice, your own skates stop being an extravagance, and the lesson providers generally expect you to bring your own by the higher levels.

Wrist guards are the protection that matters. Falls in skating go backwards and onto hands, and a wrist injury is the common one. Knee pads are comfort; wrist guards are the useful ones.

Sessions are timed and ticketed rather than drop-in at most venues, and weekend evening slots sell out. Book rather than turning up.

If this is not quite it

Ice skating is the winter equivalent and much more seasonal. Activity bars cover the other do-something-with-your-hands nights out, silent discos are the dancing version, and things to do in London at night covers the evening by hour.

Tonight lists what is actually on this evening, including the skate nights when we have checked them.

Questions people ask

Where can you go roller skating in London?

Rollernation is the established roller disco, at 117 Bruce Grove, N17 6UR in Tottenham. Note that it moved from Vauxhall and many older listings still give the old address. For lessons rather than a night out, Roll Happy runs courses at venues including Brixton.

How much are roller skating lessons in London?

Checked on 9 September 2026: a six week Roll Happy course was £100. They also run one-off lessons and social skates, which is the lower-commitment option.

Do you need to be able to skate to go to a roller disco?

No, and skate hire is normal. But learning to stop is the skill that makes the difference between an enjoyable night and an alarming one, and it is the reason most people who try roller skating once do not go back.

What should you wear roller skating?

Wrist guards above everything else. Falls in skating tend to go backwards and onto the hands, so wrists take the impact. Knee pads are comfort; wrist guards are the protection that matters.

This guide is rewritten rather than refreshed, and everything named in it is checked against the venue's own page. Times and prices change; where a listing links to a venue, that link is the one to trust. How we choose what goes in.
