A day in Margate

An hour and a half from St Pancras. Turner Contemporary is free, the sand is the best within reach of London, and the old town is a short walk from the station.

What to expect

What it is

Turner Contemporary is free and sits right on the seafront, the sand is the best within reach of London, and the old town behind the harbour has been quietly taken over by places worth eating in. Dreamland is the funfair and it is ticketed separately. It is a genuine day rather than an afternoon.

Getting there

Around an hour and a half from St Pancras on the highspeed, and the old town is a short walk from the station.

What it costs

No fixed fare worth printing: an advance single booked weeks out and a walk-up return on the day are different amounts of money, and one number quoted for a train ticket is really a statement about the day somebody looked. Book ahead and it is cheap. The one thing Southeastern publishes and holds to is Kids for a Quid, which lets an adult travel with up to four children at a pound each, and on a family day out that is most of the cost gone.
