What to expect

What it is

The one covered market on this page, and a permanent one rather than a row of chalets put up for six weeks. The stalls are traders with their own businesses, so it is craft, antiques and cooked food rather than the same mulled wine and the same felt decorations you get at every seasonal market in the city.

When it is open

Every day, 10am to 5.30pm, bank holidays included. It closes on Christmas Day and on the first six Mondays of the new year, and that is the whole list. Which market you get depends on the day: arts and crafts on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and at weekends, antiques and collectables on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Friday is the day both run.

Why it is worth the trip in December

Because it is under a roof. The riverside markets are exposed and December in London is usually wet, and this is the one you can spend an hour in without getting cold. It is also open on days the seasonal markets have packed up, including the days between Christmas and the new year.

What else is there

The market sits inside Maritime Greenwich, so the Old Royal Naval College, the Cutty Sark and the park are all a few minutes away. Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich on the DLR is the nearest station. The river boat from central London costs more and takes longer and is the better journey if it is dry.

Nearby

Greenwich has the nearest stations and everything else on in the same part of town. The Greenwich Market page collects every listing we hold for that address. Filed under Markets.
