Directions

What to expect

Oxford and Cambridge over four and a quarter miles of tidal Thames from Putney to Mortlake, rowed since 1829. The whole thing takes under twenty minutes and passes any given point in about twenty seconds, which is the joke of it and the reason people make a day of the rest.

Worth knowing

Free from both banks. Putney is where the crowds and the pubs are; Hammersmith and the Chiswick bank are quieter and you see more water. The big screens at Bishop’s Park and Furnivall Gardens show the parts you cannot see. Check the tide time, because the start moves with it every year and can be as late as the evening.

Getting there

Putney Bridge, Hammersmith and Barnes Bridge are the stations along the course. Barnes is the one nobody thinks of. The Hammersmith page has the rest of what is on nearby.
