London Zoo: how long you need and the quiet times

What a day at London Zoo actually involves: how long it takes, when it is quietest, and how to use the keeper talks rather than wander past them.

Penguins in a zoo enclosure

London Zoo is in Regent’s Park, which surprises people who expect it to be out of town. It is run by the Zoological Society of London, it is the oldest scientific zoo in the world, and the site is long and thin rather than compact.

How long you need

Half a day is the honest answer for most people, and a full day if you are with children who want to stop at everything. The site is bigger than it looks on the map and involves more walking than the map suggests, partly because it is split by a road and a canal with bridges between the halves.

Use the talks, do not wander

The scheduled keeper talks and feeds are the difference between a good visit and an expensive walk. They run through the day at fixed times, they are included, and they are where you actually learn something and see animals doing more than sleeping.

Pick two or three from the day’s schedule when you arrive and build the route around them. Trying to see everything and catching no talks is the common mistake.

When to go

Term-time weekday mornings are quietest. School holidays and sunny weekends are busiest, and the indoor houses become uncomfortable when it is full. Animals are more active in cooler weather and early in the day, so a bright cold morning beats a hot afternoon.

Getting there

Camden Town is the usual tube and then a walk through the park, which is pleasant and longer than people expect. Baker Street is a similar walk from the other side. The bus that stops closest is the practical option with a pushchair or with tired children on the way out. Under-elevens travel free on the tube and buses with a fare-paying adult.

Who it suits

Children of almost any age, which is not true of most large London attractions. It is one of the few big-ticket days out that works as well for a four year old as a nine year old. Adults without children generally get more out of it early on a weekday.

Nearby, and cheaper

Regent’s Park itself is free and immediately outside, and Primrose Hill with its view over the city is a short walk north. For a day out that costs nothing at all, free things to do in London with kids covers the city farms, several of which have real animals and no ticket.

Things to do in London with kids covers the rest, paid and free.

Opening times and the ticket options

Checked on the operator’s own page on 9 September 2026. London Zoo publishes its hours as a seasonal table rather than a single time. From 3 September to 23 October 2026 it opens at 10am, last entry 4pm, closing 5pm. From 24 October 2026 to 12 February 2027 it opens at 10am, last entry 3pm, closing 4pm. Last entry is always an hour before closing, and some animal exhibits shut up to half an hour before that, which is the practical end of the day.

Three things on the ticket that are worth knowing and are easy to miss. A Flexi ticket carries a 15 per cent discount and lets you come any time in the following twelve months rather than on a fixed date. Universal Credit tickets are sold at a reduced price, online only and in limited numbers. And ZSL is a conservation charity, so there is no VAT on admission, which is why the gate price compares better with commercial attractions than it looks.

Prices are cheapest online in advance and differ at the gate. Bag checks and screening are carried out at the entrance, so travel light. Children under 16 are not admitted without an adult.

What London Zoo actually costs

Checked on the operator’s own page on 9 September 2026. The Zoo prices in four bands, and which band your day falls in matters more than anything else you can control. Booking online before 10am on the day of the visit is the cheaper of two price lists; at the gate, or online after 10am, is the dearer one.

Online in advance, excluding the voluntary donation: adult £27.70 on an off peak weekday, £31.80 standard, £33.60 at a standard weekend and £34.50 at peak. Child aged 3 to 15: £19.40, £22.20, £23.50 and £24.10 across the same four bands. Concessions sit between the two. Under threes are free and so are ZSL members.

At the gate, or online after 10am, the same adult bands are £29.50, £33.60, £35.40 and £36.30. So booking ahead saves roughly two pounds a head, which is less than most attractions and worth knowing before you rearrange a morning around it.

One thing to watch on the way through checkout: the prices the Zoo shows by default include a 10 per cent voluntary donation to ZSL’s conservation work. The figures above are the ones without it. The donation is optional and the difference is about three pounds on an adult ticket, so decide deliberately rather than by accident. ZSL is a charity, which is also why there is no VAT on admission.
