Day trips from London by train: castles, cities and gardens

Where you can actually get to and back in a day without a car, how long each takes, and which are worth the fare.

An English country village

A day trip from London works or fails on one number: the door-to-door journey time. Anything under ninety minutes each way is a comfortable day. Anything over two hours means you arrive at noon and start worrying about the return at three.

Everything below is reachable by train from a central London terminus, with the realistic journey time rather than the optimistic one.

Castles and great houses

Hever Castle, Kent. Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, with a moat, a Tudor interior, formal gardens and a water maze. Hever station is about 50 minutes from London Bridge or Victoria, then roughly a mile on foot to the castle, which is a pleasant walk in summer and a wet one in February. It is seasonal, so check opening before you go.

Leeds Castle, Kent, is the other one people mean, reached via Bearsted with a connecting coach. Windsor Castle is the easiest of the three: about 55 minutes from Waterloo direct, or Paddington changing at Slough, and the castle is a few minutes from the station.

Cities you can do in a day

Oxford, about an hour from Paddington or Marylebone. Cambridge, about 50 minutes from King’s Cross, and the more walkable of the two. Canterbury, under an hour on the high-speed line from St Pancras, with the cathedral and a compact centre.

Bath is about 90 minutes from Paddington and is the furthest that still works comfortably. St Albans is 20 minutes from St Pancras and is the one nobody thinks of: a Roman city, a cathedral and a good market, for the price of a travelcard extension.

Gardens and countryside

Kew and Hampton Court are technically in London and covered in our guides, so they are the cheap version of this list. Outside London, Wisley via Woking and Sissinghurst via Staplehurst both need a bus or taxi at the far end.

Rye, about 1 hour 10 from St Pancras, is a preserved medieval hill town and one of the best short trips out of London. Lewes, an hour from Victoria, is the same idea with better pubs and a castle.

The things that decide whether it is worth it

Advance tickets. Booking a specific train ahead is routinely half the walk-up fare or less. The catch is that you are tied to that train coming back, which for a day trip is usually fine.

Railcards pay for themselves in two trips. A Two Together or Network Railcard covers most of this list.

Check the last train back before you commit to dinner. Several of these have a sparse evening service, and a missed connection at Ashford is an expensive night.

Bank holidays are when engineering work happens. Check the route rather than assuming, especially anything through Kent or on the high-speed line.

The honest caveat

This site covers London, and these are the exceptions: places close enough that a Londoner treats them as a day out rather than a holiday. If you want the coast specifically, our beaches guide has the sandy ones and the train times.

Destinations, with the trains checked

Each of these has a page of its own with the journey time read off National Rail rather than estimated, because whether a trip is doable is the only question that matters before you book anything. Sevenoaks is 36 minutes from Charing Cross and holds Knole, a 600-year-old deer park where the booking rule catches even National Trust members. Tonbridge is 42 minutes and has a 950-year-old castle straight off the high street.

Mersea Island is an hour and a half all in, and the tide closes the only road onto it twice a day for one week a month, which is the thing to plan the day around. The Wye Valley is on this list everywhere else and should not be: it is two hours each way with a change, so that page explains the arithmetic and sends you to weekend trips instead.
