What to expect

What it is

The whole city is a world heritage site and it is small enough to see properly in a day: everything is within about twenty minutes’ walk. The Roman baths are the reason to come, the Georgian crescents are the reason to stay out walking, and the modern spa on the roof is open late in summer.

Getting there

An hour and a half from Paddington.

What it costs

No fixed fare worth printing. An advance single booked weeks ahead and a walk-up return bought on the platform are different amounts of money, so a single figure for a train ticket only describes the day somebody looked it up. Book ahead if the date is fixed, and check whether a railcard or a group ticket beats two singles before you pay.
