A weekend in the Cotswolds

Moreton-in-Marsh is ninety minutes direct from Paddington and you can walk out of the station into the countryside, which is not true of most of them. Book beds well ahead in summer.

What to expect

What it is

The trick with the Cotswolds by train is picking a station you can walk out of. Moreton-in-Marsh is that station: the countryside starts at the end of the platform, with footpaths to Bourton-on-the-Water and the Slaughters from the town itself. Most of the pretty villages need a car and this one does not.

Getting there

Moreton-in-Marsh is ninety minutes direct from Paddington, no changes.

What it costs

No fixed fare worth printing. An advance single booked weeks ahead and a walk-up return bought on the platform are different amounts of money, so a single figure for a train ticket only describes the day somebody looked it up. Book ahead if the date is fixed, and check whether a railcard or a group ticket beats two singles before you pay.
