A day in Dover

An hour and a quarter to Dover Priory on the highspeed. The white cliffs, a castle with wartime tunnels under it, and France on the horizon on a clear day.

What to expect

What it is

Not a beach day, a view day. The cliffs are the thing and they are genuinely as advertised, best walked eastwards from the town towards South Foreland. Dover Castle sits above it with the wartime tunnels cut into the rock underneath, which is the part people remember. On a clear day you can see France from the top.

Getting there

An hour and a quarter from St Pancras to Dover Priory on Southeastern’s highspeed service. The station is a walk from the seafront rather than on it.

What it costs

There is no fixed fare worth printing: an advance single booked weeks out and a walk-up return on the day are different amounts of money, and anyone quoting one number for a train ticket is quoting the day they looked. Book ahead and it is cheap; turn up and it is not. The one thing Southeastern does publish and hold to is Kids for a Quid, which lets an adult travel with up to four children at a pound each, and on a family day out that is most of the cost gone.
