Pancake Day in London 2027: the races, and where to eat them

Tuesday 9 February 2027. Shrove Tuesday moves every year because it is tied to Easter, and it lands 47 days before Easter Sunday, which in 2027 is 28 March. So this one is arithmetic rather than a guess.
The races
Several are run for charity across the City, Spitalfields and Westminster, usually at lunchtime, usually in fancy dress, and usually with teams from law firms, livery companies and local restaurants. They are free to watch and take about twenty minutes. Entry, where it is open at all, is by team and goes to the organising charity.
Eating them
Creperies and the better brunch places do a trade all day and many run a Shrove Tuesday menu. It is one of the few food days in London where turning up somewhere small and local beats booking somewhere well known, because the well known ones are full of people who booked in January.
Why it moves
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent, so the whole thing hangs off the date of Easter, which is itself set by the first full moon after the spring equinox. That is why it can fall anywhere from early February to early March.
