Rooftop bars in London: the free ones, the booked ones, and the seasonal ones
Where to drink with a view, what you need to book, and which rooftops cost nothing at all.

A rooftop in London is worth it for about five months of the year and worth booking for two of them. The rest of the time you are paying a view premium to sit under a heater in the wind, which some people enjoy and most do not.
How to read this page. Every venue named below publicly advertises what we say it does, and the details come from the venue’s own listings, checked in September 2026. That is a statement of fact about what they offer, not a verdict on the night. Prices and opening hours change, so check the venue before you travel.
The free ones, which nobody mentions
One New Change has a public roof terrace looking straight at the dome of St Paul’s. No booking, no minimum spend, and you can go up without buying anything at all. It is the best free view in the City and there is a bar up there if you want one.
Crossrail Place Roof Garden at Canary Wharf is a covered garden above the Elizabeth line station, free and open daily, with a restaurant you are not obliged to use.
Sky Garden at 20 Fenchurch Street is free but requires a slot booked ahead, released a few weeks out and gone quickly. The bars up there are paid; the entry is not.
The big paid ones
Pergola on the Wharf at Canary Wharf is a large covered rooftop with several kitchens under one roof, which makes it the reliable option for a group with different tastes.
Wagtail on Rood Lane and 14 Hills at 120 Fenchurch Street are both City rooftops with proper restaurants attached, aimed at the after-work crowd and priced for it.
Roof East in Stratford sits on top of a car park and runs a summer programme of batting cages, crazy golf and outdoor film alongside the bar, which makes it the least formal of the lot.
The seasonal ones
Several London rooftops are summer-only and close entirely from about October, and several others reverse it and put up winter structures. Frank’s Cafe in Peckham, on top of the multi-storey next to the Bussey Building, is the summer one everybody means when they say Peckham rooftop, and it does not run in winter.
Rooftop cinema seasons run from roughly May to September, mostly in Peckham and Stratford. Our outdoor cinema guide has those.
What to check before you book
Is it actually outdoors? A lot of London rooftops are glazed or covered, which is why they can trade in January. That is fine, but it is a room with a view rather than a roof terrace.
Minimum spend and time limit. Weekend rooftop bookings frequently carry both, usually a two-hour table.
The weather policy. Open-air rooftops close in high wind, sometimes at short notice, and the good ones tell you and refund. Check before you cross London.
The dress code, which the City rooftops enforce and the Peckham ones do not.
The honest bit
The view is the product, so go at the right time of day for it. About an hour before sunset is when a rooftop earns the money, and that is also the slot everyone else has booked. An early evening in May is better value than a Saturday night in August, and a weekday lunchtime at One New Change costs nothing at all.

Questions people ask
Are there free rooftop bars in London?
Yes. One New Change has a public roof terrace facing St Paul's with no booking and no minimum spend. Crossrail Place Roof Garden at Canary Wharf is free and open daily. Sky Garden is free to enter but needs a slot booked weeks ahead.
Do you need to book rooftop bars in London?
For the paid ones at a weekend, yes, and expect a two-hour table and often a minimum spend. The free terraces need no booking at all, apart from Sky Garden.
Which London rooftop bars are open in winter?
The covered and glazed ones, including Pergola on the Wharf and the City rooftops. Genuinely open-air rooftops such as Frank's Cafe in Peckham are summer-only and close from around October.
What time should you go to a rooftop bar?
About an hour before sunset, which is when the view is worth the price. That is also the most-booked slot, so reserve ahead or go on a weekday.
Do rooftop bars close in bad weather?
Open-air ones do close in high wind, sometimes at short notice. Check the venue before travelling across London.
Which rooftop has the best view of St Paul's?
One New Change, which faces the dome directly and is free to go up.
Every listing on this page is checked against the venue's own page and the page is rewritten each year, usually six to eight weeks before the dates. Times and prices can change on the night; the venue link on each event is the one to trust. How we choose what goes in.
