A day in Cambridge

Fifty minutes from King's Cross, which makes it the closest of the university towns. The Fitzwilliam is free and punting is the thing everyone does and nobody regrets.

What to expect

What it is

The closest of the university towns and the easiest to do in a day. The Fitzwilliam is free and is a proper museum rather than a college collection. Punting is the thing everybody does and nobody regrets, and it is cheaper to take a punt out yourself than to be chauffeured, if you can steer.

Getting there

Fifty minutes from King’s Cross, which is less than some journeys inside London.

What it costs

No fixed fare worth printing. An advance single booked weeks ahead and a walk-up return bought on the platform are different amounts of money, so a single figure for a train ticket only describes the day somebody looked it up. Book ahead if the date is fixed, and check whether a railcard or a group ticket beats two singles before you pay.
