Tonbridge from London: 42 minutes to a 950-year-old castle

Tonbridge is 42 minutes from Charing Cross and its castle is one of the best preserved in Kent, straight off the high street. What to expect and how to plan it.

A medieval castle keep

Tonbridge is the day trip for people who want a castle without a coach party. It is a Kent market town on the Medway, and the castle is not on the edge of it or up a hill outside it: you step off the high street into it.

Getting there

Journey times checked on the National Rail journey planner for a weekday departure on 9 September 2026. The fastest direct service from London Charing Cross to Tonbridge is 42 minutes, and there are typically four or five an hour. Almost everything on this route is direct, and the spread between fastest and slowest is small, around 42 to 46 minutes, so any train will do.

Midday singles were showing from £19.10 when we checked. As with everywhere on this line, travelling outside the morning peak is markedly cheaper.

The castle

Tonbridge Castle describes itself as Kent’s most authentic medieval castle, and the claim is about preservation rather than size. It has stood over the town for 950 years.

You can explore the gatehouse, the great hall, the winding stairs and the basement, and climb the motte for views across the town and the Medway valley. The enclosed bailey lawn is laid out for picnics, which makes this an unusually easy castle to do with children: there is somewhere to sit and let them run at the end of it.

It also does school visits, weddings and private hire, so a section can occasionally be closed for an event. Worth checking before you travel if the gatehouse is the whole reason you are going.

The rest of the town

The Medway runs through the middle of Tonbridge and the riverside walk is the obvious companion to the castle. The high street is a working market town high street rather than a heritage set, which is either the appeal or the disappointment depending on what you came for.

Combining it

Sevenoaks is fifteen minutes back up the same line and holds Knole, so the two make a plausible pair if you want a castle and a deer park in one day. Doing both properly is a long day; doing the castle and Knole park, rather than Knole house, is comfortable.

Day trips from London covers everything else within reach, and weekend trips covers what needs longer.
