London's evening edition. Independent, updated daily.

Blossom does not keep to a calendar. Late March into April is the usual window and a warm or cold spring moves it by a fortnight in either direction.

Where to see cherry blossom in London: the spots and roughly when

Late March into April, and over quickly. Greenwich, Kew, Regent's Park, the Kyoto Garden, and the Notting Hill streets that do it better than the parks.

Cherry blossom in a park

Late March into April, and gone in a fortnight. A warm spring brings it forward, a cold one holds it back, and a windy week ends it early, so the only reliable advice is to go when you hear it has started rather than booking a date.

The parks

Greenwich Park has the avenue most people photograph. Kew has both the quantity and the labels, if you want to know what you are looking at. In Regent’s Park the ornamental cherries along Chester Road and around the Inner Circle make a tunnel of it. The Kyoto Garden in Holland Park is small, deliberate and busy for the reason that it is good. The Blossom Garden at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is the newest and the least crowded.

The streets, which are often better

Notting Hill and Kensington do it best, because white stucco behind pink is a better picture than blossom against grass. Stanley Crescent, the Hillgate village streets, and Blithfield Street in Kensington, which has a row down each pavement. These are people’s homes, so keep to the pavement and keep the noise down.

A note on timing

Different varieties open at different times, so a spot that is bare one weekend can be at its best the next. St Paul’s churchyard, Swiss Cottage and Battersea Park all run a little later than the west London streets.

Questions people ask

When is cherry blossom season in London?

Late March into April in most years, lasting about a fortnight in any one spot. A warm or cold spring shifts it by up to two weeks.

Where is the best cherry blossom in London?

Greenwich Park for the avenue, Kew for the range, Regent's Park along Chester Road and the Inner Circle, and the Kyoto Garden in Holland Park. The Notting Hill and Kensington streets are arguably better than any of the parks.

Is it free to see cherry blossom in London?

Everywhere above is free except Kew Gardens, which charges admission.

What time of day is best?

Early morning, for the light and because the well known spots fill up by late morning at weekends.

Why does it look different from one week to the next?

Different cherry varieties flower at different times, so a spot can be bare one weekend and at its peak the next.

Every listing on this page is checked against the venue's own page and the page is rewritten each year, usually six to eight weeks before the dates. Times and prices can change on the night; the venue link on each event is the one to trust. How we choose what goes in.
