Sunset views in London: the free ones, ranked by effort

Where to watch the sun go down over London without paying for it, plus the one view protected by an Act of Parliament.

The London skyline at sunset

London faces west along the river, which means the good sunsets are the ones with the Thames in them, and most of the best places to watch from cost nothing at all.

Sorted by how much effort each one takes, because on a clear evening you have about forty minutes to get somewhere.

No effort at all

Waterloo Bridge. The best free view in London and it is a public pavement. West gives you the Houses of Parliament and the sunset itself, east gives you St Paul’s and the City catching the last light. It is the only bridge with both, and it is why people who live here rate it above every paid viewpoint.

The Millennium Bridge and the South Bank between Waterloo and Blackfriars do a similar job with more people on them.

A short walk uphill

Primrose Hill. The postcard: the whole skyline laid out with the park in front of it, about ten minutes up from Chalk Farm. Busy on a good evening and worth it anyway. The park gates close after dusk, so check the seasonal closing time.

Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath is higher, wilder and slightly further from the tube, and the view is broader. The better of the two if you want space.

Greenwich Park, at the General Wolfe statue by the Observatory, gives you Canary Wharf and the river with the Queen’s House in the foreground. It is the most photographed view in south London for good reason.

Alexandra Palace has the biggest view of all of them, the whole city from a terrace on a hill, and it is completely free.

The one protected by law

Richmond Hill looks over the Thames as it bends through the meadows, and it is the only view in England protected by its own Act of Parliament, the Richmond, Petersham and Ham Open Spaces Act of 1902. Turner painted it. It is a long way out and it is worth the trip once.

Rooftops that cost nothing

One New Change has a public roof terrace facing the dome of St Paul’s, free, no booking, and open into the evening. Crossrail Place Roof Garden at Canary Wharf is free and covered. Sky Garden is free but needs a slot booked weeks ahead, and sunset slots are the first to go.

Our rooftop guide covers the paid ones and what they charge for the privilege.

The underrated ones

Point Hill in Greenwich, a small patch of grass most Londoners have never heard of, with a view straight down the river to the City. Horniman Gardens in Forest Hill, free, with south London spread out below. Severndroog Castle on Shooter’s Hill, an eighteenth-century folly in the woods with a viewing platform.

Getting the timing right

Arrive forty minutes before sunset, not at it. The best light is the twenty minutes before the sun goes down and the twenty after, and the second half, when the city lights come on against a blue sky, is better than the first.

Midwinter sunset in London is shortly before four in the afternoon and midsummer is after nine, which is a five-hour swing and the reason a plan that worked in June fails in December.

Clear is not best. A completely cloudless sky gives a plain orange. Scattered high cloud is what produces the sunsets people photograph, so a partly cloudy forecast is the one to go out on.

Sunsets and views: what is on

Sat 24 October to Thu 31 December

Saturday

24 October
  1. Free

    Parliament Hill viewpoint

    07:00 Parliament Hill, Hampstead

A protected view all the way to the City, which is why nothing is allowed to be built in front of it. Ten minutes up from Gospel Oak and worth doing an hour before sunset.

  2. Free

    The Italian Gardens, Kensington Gardens

    08:00 Italian Gardens, Bayswater

Four basins and a pump house Albert built for Victoria, at the Lancaster Gate corner of the park. Best in the hour before the fountains go off for the night, when the light comes across the water.

  3. Free

    Sky Garden

    10:00 Sky Garden, The City

Three floors of planted terrace at the top of the Walkie Talkie, free but booked in advance and the slots go about three weeks out. Sunset slots go first. Photo identification on the door.

  4. Food and drink From £6

    Netil360 rooftop, Hackney

    16:00 Netil360, Hackney

A roof above a car park in London Fields with the whole City skyline lined up in front of it. Small, so it fills on a warm evening; the view is the reason rather than the drinks list.

  5. Clubs From £6

    Rooftop at the Bussey Building

17:00 Copeland Park and the Bussey Building, Peckham

Peckham's roof bar, up several flights above the old cricket bat factory, looking back at the city from the south. Runs late at the weekend and the yard below keeps going after it shuts.

  6. Free

Evening walk: Kensington Gardens to the Round Pond

    18:30 Kensington Gardens, Kensington

The pond sits on the axis of the palace, so the view back at it in low light is the one the garden was laid out to give you. Twenty minutes from the High Street.

  7. Free

    Waterloo Bridge at dusk

    19:00 Waterloo Bridge, Waterloo

The only crossing with both the City and Westminster in one turn of the head. Built largely by women during the war, which is why it is sometimes called the Ladies Bridge.

  1. Free

    Parliament Hill viewpoint

    07:00 Parliament Hill, Hampstead

  2. Free

    Sky Garden

    10:00 Sky Garden, The City

  3. Free

    19:00 Waterloo Bridge, Waterloo

Questions people ask

Where is the best free sunset view in London?

Waterloo Bridge, which is a public pavement with Parliament and the sunset to the west and St Paul's catching the last light to the east. It is the only bridge with both views.

Where can you watch the sunset over London for free?

Primrose Hill, Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath, Greenwich Park by the General Wolfe statue, Alexandra Palace, and the public roof terrace at One New Change. All are free and none need booking.

Which London view is protected by law?

Richmond Hill, over the Thames bend, protected by the Richmond, Petersham and Ham Open Spaces Act of 1902. It is the only view in England protected by its own Act of Parliament.

What time should I arrive for sunset in London?

About forty minutes before sunset. The best light runs from twenty minutes before to twenty minutes after, and the second half, when the city lights come on against a blue sky, is usually better.

Is a clear sky best for sunset photos?

No. A cloudless sky gives a plain orange. Scattered high cloud produces the dramatic sunsets, so a partly cloudy forecast is the better bet.

What time is sunset in London?

It swings by about five hours across the year, from shortly before four in the afternoon at midwinter to after nine at midsummer.
