Things to do in London for couples: beyond dinner and a film

Romantic things to do in London that are not just dinner: the views, the small rooms, the walks, and what is worth booking rather than wandering into.

Two people walking in the city at night

The trouble with romantic things to do in London is that the marketed ones are mostly expensive and mostly the same: a high-up restaurant, a river cruise with a set menu, a bar with a view and a queue. They are fine. They are also what everyone else booked.

What follows is sorted by how much planning it takes, because the difference between a good evening and a frustrating one in London is almost always booking, not budget.

Things that need no booking at all

The walk from Southwark to Tower Bridge along the river after dark, which is free and genuinely one of the best things in the city. St Dunstan in the East, a bombed church kept as a garden, empty on a weekday. Crossrail Place Roof Garden, which is warm, covered and almost nobody knows about it.

Sunset spots and London walks cover the rest of the free half. In winter this is the strongest category, because everything worth doing outdoors happens before five and the crowds have not left work yet.

Things worth booking a week ahead

Candlelit concerts are the one that consistently works: an hour, a church or a hall, no interval, and nobody has to know anything about music. Live jazz in the small rooms does the same job with a bar attached.

Cabaret and burlesque is the braver choice and lands better than people expect, provided you book a table rather than turning up. Immersive shows are the version for people who would rather do something than sit still.

Things that work when one of you has planned nothing

Activity bars take the pressure off a first or second date, because there is something to do with your hands and a natural end. Bottomless brunch is the weekend equivalent and needs booking, usually for a two hour slot.

Our date night guide covers the evening version in more detail, and tonight is the live list if you have left it to the afternoon.

Out of London for the day

Day trips reachable in under an hour on a train do more for a weekend than most things inside the M25, and beaches near London are real if you are prepared for the North Sea. Weekend trips covers the overnight version.

Questions people ask

What are the most romantic things to do in London?

The free ones hold up best: the river walk from Southwark to Tower Bridge after dark, St Dunstan in the East, and the sunset spots. For a booked evening, candlelit concerts and the small jazz rooms are the most reliable.

What can couples do in London on a budget?

The national museums are free and open every day, the parks and river walks cost nothing, and comedy clubs run free or pay what you want nights midweek. Our free things to do guide has the full list.

How far ahead should you book a date night in London?

A week is usually enough midweek and not enough for a Friday or Saturday. Candlelit concerts and bottomless brunch slots go furthest ahead; activity bars and comedy are usually available the same week.

What is there to do in London for couples at night?

Museum lates, candlelit concerts, cabaret, live jazz and the rooftop bars before the queues. Our things to do at night guide covers the evening hour by hour.

Every listing on this page is checked against the venue's own page and the page is rewritten each year, usually six to eight weeks before the dates. Times and prices can change on the night; the venue link on each event is the one to trust. How we choose what goes in.
